Internal residuals broaden the temperature distribution and lengthen the burn duration in HCCI. The maximum TDC temperature and combustion phasing both affect thermal stratification. Swirl is able to broaden the temperature distribution and lengthen the burn duration. Swirl also increases heat transfer losses and reduces efficiency.
