Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is poor in elderly MDD patients referred for ECT. An acute course of high dose, right unilateral, ultrabrief pulse ECT is associated with improvements in HRQOL in elderly MDD. HRQOL in elderly MDD patients after ECT are related to the antidepressant effect of ECT, not the cognitive side effects of ECT.
