The recirculation loop of the AD-MEC system was needed to keep the stability. AD and MEC total population differed from metabolically active microorganisms. Potentially electroactive Desulfuromonadaceae was metabolically active in the MEC. AD operation conditions (VFA, N) promoted hydrogenotrophic methanogens dominance.
