Pyrolysis evaporation results in the invalidation of Cl-containing active constituents in municipal waste.

Sulfide serves as chemisorption site oxidizing Hg0 into HgS for char derived from tire waste.

Both physical activation and chemical modification possibly remove or cover inherent active sites of char.

The results provide a meaningful guidance on preparation method of low-cost mercury sorbent.
