Elemental sulfur recovery and spatial distribution of functional bacteria and expressed genes under different carbon/nitrate/sulfide loadings in up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors

The variations of influent loading altered S0 recovery rate and bacterial structure. The optimized loads of acetate, nitrate and sulfide were 0.95, 0.79, and 0.34 kg d−1 m−3, respectively. The highest S0 recovery rate was 77.9% when Thauera and Sulfurimonas were predominant. Insufficient loading caused a low S0 yield and sulfide oxidation activity. Excess nutrient loading caused the over-oxidation of S0 to sulfate.
