Syrian hamsters can recognize the social odors of a conspecific for 24 h.

OT and AVP prolong the recognition of social odors to 48 h.

OTR but not V1aR agonists enhance social recognition.

OTR antagonists but not V1aR antagonists block social recognition.

Our data provide the first evidence AVP can act on OTRs to influence behavior.
