A shock model is developed to guide the crashworthiness design of graded cellular materials. A much accurate material model, namely the R-PH idealization, is applied to the shock model. Differential equations are obtained to design the relative density distribution. A varying cell-size distribution method is developed to construct 3D graded cellular structures. Cell-based finite element models verify the design strategy based on the shock model. A scheme with restricting the shock strain is proposed to shorten the graded cellular rods.
