Molecular characterization of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli hemolysin gene (EHEC-hlyA)-harboring isolates from cattle reveals a diverse origin and hybrid diarrheagenic strains

The screening of Escherichia coli isolates from cattle showed that 11.9% of E. coli isolates harbored EHEC-hlyA.

The EHEC-hlyA harboring isolates were related to EHEC (72%), ETEC (11.1%), and EPEC (7.4%) pathotypes.

The stx-/eae+ strains carried O island 57 (OI-57) molecular marker(s) that may reflect the EHEC genomic backbone.

Two strains had hybrid genotypes: EHEC/ETEC and EPEC/ETEC, both belonging to phylogenetic group A.
