mEC exhibits persistent Up state activity in the absence of neocortical input in vitro. NMDA receptors are required for Up states in the neocortex, but not in the mEC. Kainate receptors maintain Up states in the mEC. Kainate receptor currents are sufficient to maintain Up states in silico.
