Characterization of local hydrophobicity on sapphire (0001) surfaces in aqueous environment by colloidal probe atomic force microscopy

Local hydrophobicity of phase-separated sapphire (0001) surfaces was investigated. These surfaces are featured by coexistence of hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains. Each domain was characterized by colloidal probe atomic force microscopy in water. Both domains can be distinguished by adhesive forces of the probe to the surfaces. Characterization in aqueous environment is important in bio-applications of sapphire.
