Data centers require substantial amounts of energy for cooling. The energy consumption depends strongly on the thermal load and environmental conditions. Transient effects are important due to load variations. Load distribution may be used effectively to reduce total energy consumption. The location may be chosen to reduce energy needed for cooling. Overall optimization could lead to substantial reduction in energy consumption.
