Legal status (in)directly shapes linkages of semi-legal activities and the environment. Cannabis cultivation and other quasi-legal practices can degrade local ecosystems. Conflicting legal status creates challenges research and environmental governance. Enhanced regulations may help to limit the effects of quasi-legal cultivation. Additional remediation resources are key to address effects of the black market.
