Herein we demonstrate that a novel molecular rectifier is successfully created based on self-rectification behavior of ferrocyanide. The surface-incorporated ferrocyanide at the as-prepared electrode acts as electron transfer mediator to control electrochemical behavior of solution-phase ferrocyanide. Only anodic current is allowed to pass through the modified electrode. Under the circumstance, the as-prepared electrode acts as anodic molecular rectifier. Depending on external chemical stimulus, the functionalized electrode could also act as cathodic molecular rectifier and only cathodic current is allowed to pass through if selecting hexachloroiridate (IV) as solution-phase redox probe.
