MbFeIII and HbFeIII demonstrate peroxidative activity in the presence of nitrite. The peroxidase activity is accompanied by a progressive heme inactivation. Nitroxides protect the heme against inactivation. Nitroxides convert the peroxidative activity into catalatic one. Nitroxides catalytically inhibit nitrite oxidation and prevent tyrosine nitration.
