Rational design of π-bridges for ambipolar DPP-RH-based small molecules in organic photovoltaic cells

A series of small molecules based on diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and rhodanine (RH) dye for OPVs. They have different π-bridges of bithiophene (2T), furan-thiophene (FT), and thiophene (T). Introduction of furan resulted in relatively high crystallinity of DPPFT-RH. Frontier energy levels decreased in the order DPP2T-RH > DPPFT-RH > DPPT-RH. Ambipolar small molecules showed PCE of ∼1% when used as both donors and acceptors.
