Euphorbia lathyris L. is a weed that grows in central and southern Chile. Its seeds have a high oil content, as do those of Brassica napus L. and Ricinus communis L. The oils of these species can be used for biodiesel production. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the yield and quality of biodiesel produced from the oil of E. lathyris, as compared with that of B. napus and R. communis, and to characterize chemically its press cake. The biodiesel was elaborated using basic transesterification on the laboratory scale. We determined the yield of biodiesel and its main quality parameters according to current quality standards. The press cake was characterized chemically and its caloric value was determined. The results indicate that it is possible to produce biodiesel from the oil of E. lathyris with a yield of 91.1 % ; the quality of the E. lathyris biodiesel was equivalent to that obtained using B. napus oil and superior to that obtained with R. communis oil. Given their properties, the press cakes resulting from the oil extraction process of E. lathyris and the other two plants studied can be used in other productive processes such as the production of biofertilizers or thermal energy (17.75-23.84 MJ kg?).
