First investigation into the brain bases of arithmetic and reading from childhood through adulthood. Addition and subtraction tasks targeted operation-specific task activity. Factorial design identified areas modulated by task (reading, addition, subtraction) and age, and their interactions. Provides support for divergence (reading and subtraction) and convergence (reading and addition) in brain function across tasks.
