Evaporation was measured from soil tanks with water repellent surface layers. Water repellency induced deep preferential flow, reducing evaporation rates. Least evaporation came from tanks with moderate or decreasingly repellent layers. Field water repellency distributions appear well-suited to reducing evaporation.
