Recent advances in mathematical modeling and statistical analysis of exocytosis in endocrine cells

Hormones are released from endocrine cells as a result of granule exocytosis. We review recent quantitative methods for investigations of exocytosis. Discrete Ca2+ microdomains are important for exocytosis. Simulations of buffered Ca2+ diffusion provide insight into the dynamics of local Ca2+. Statistical time-to-event analysis can provide single-granule estimates of exocytosis rates. Applications to several endocrine cell types are provided.
