The top tension is optimized with the minimum variance of the lower flexible joint deflection angle.

The analysis method include transfer matrix, spectrum analysis and cubic Hermite interpolation polynomial.

The influence of several factors on the optimal top tension has been discussed in details.

The research has important significance for optimization design of the marine drilling riser top tension.
