In silico modeling of hematologic diseases and disorders (e.g., malaria, sickle cell anemia) has proved to make a significant contribution to the understanding of various disease processes and their progression. This review presents a general computational framework for modeling blood flow on a single cell level applied here to malaria and sickle cell disease. The computational disease model is validated using several independent experimental results. The simulation approach is general enough to address a broad range of issues related to hematologic diseases and disorders with implications for diagnostics and treatment.
