Tempo inhibits OH production from the reaction of Fe(II)-citrate with H2O2 at pH7. Our data show Tempo inhibits OH production from this Fenton-like reaction by 90%. Inhibition is due to Fe(II)-citrate oxidation by Tempo shown for the first time. The oxidation stoichiometry is determined to be Tempo:Fe(III)-citrate = 1.1:1.0. A scheme is proposed to illustrate the roles of nitroxides in Fenton reactions.
