In vitro, SM MHC+ SMCs are able to proliferate. In carotid injury, the proliferating neointimal cells are consistently SM MHC+ SMCs. The adventitial CD34+ VRS/PCs can differentiate into SMC-like cells. In carotid injury, the VRS/PCs can reach only the outer layer of the media. They do not directly contribute to neointimal formation.
