Alkali-assisted hydrothermal route was developed to tailor carbon spheres. KOH in starch solution slowed hydrolysis and accelerated polymerization and growth. KOH in dilute starch solution promoted the raises of the size and yield of spheres. KOH in dense starch solution induced the reduction and uniformity of sphere size. The mean diameter of spheres varied from 0.16 to 5.61 μm.
