Acanthocephalan Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae cause severe infection in farmed Colossoma macropomum Fish showed cachexia, yellowish mucosal secretion and hyperaemic intestines Acanthocephalan proboscis surpassed the intestinal mucosa, submucosa and muscular layer provoking inflammatory reaction Submucosal oedema, increased number of goblet cells, metaplasia and reduction of the intestinal villi were found.
