The multivariate microchemical composition of otoliths in mulloway (Argyrosomus japonicus) that ingested a hook are different from controls. A hooking signal in the otolith is caused by an increase in Sr, Co and Ca. Otolith microchemistry offers an alternate tool to differentiate between wild and artificially-reared mulloway. The otolith microchemical composition is similar in fish from 195 to 356 mm total length. Normal fish functioning can potentially be negatively impacted by hook ingestion.
