Bourdieusian-inspired literature on the ‘good farmer’ might inform our discussion of fishers and their activities. This framing allows to move beyond the myopic, economic, framing of fishers seen in much previous literature and fishing policy. Managing territories, respecting gear and maintaining safety at sea are ‘rules of the game’ that shape fishers’ capital. Pre-existing and context-specific relations between fishers will significantly shape what change might be achieved by new policies.
