Within genus Flavivirus, G + C content (GC%) is higher in conserved than in variable amino acid (AA) residues. Association between GC% and AA conservation is observed in a variety of viral evolutionary groups. This association may also be encountered in some non-viral evolutionary groups. For flaviviruses, there is an increased frequency of AAs with intrinsic high G%. This suggests a relationship between characteristics of the genetic code and evolutionary behaviour of encoded AAs.
