Southern European high-altitude mountain refugia existed during the Last Glacial. Yet, palaeobotanical evidence for mountain glacial refugia is taphonomically biased. Water availability and steep altitudinal gradients are key for mountain survival. Finer-scale phylogeographical works necessary to understand glacial survival dynamics Glacial refugia research needs palaeobotany, floristics, ethnography and genetics.
