Substrates highly sensitive to detect cellular contractile forces are developed. Leader cells do not affect the speed of collective migration of MDCK-II cells. Leader cells exhibit significant traction forces and tend to undergo apoptosis. Traction force fields in cell colonies are determined by local individual cells. Marginal cells in colonies have spread morphology to exhibit high traction forces.
