The embryonic brain forms distinct sulci that physically divide forebrain regions. Forebrain sulci are initiated by differential patterns of actomyosin contraction. Forebrain sulci deepen during subsequent brain expansion under pressure. Stress-dependent growth predicts forebrain morphogenesis with and without pressure. Constrained growth may explain brain flexure and contribute to growth patterns.
