Na-montmorillonite is a weak catalyst for the synthesis of phenolic resin. H-montmorillonite is a strong catalyst for the synthesis of phenolic resin. Novolac resins with high content of methylene ether bridges are formed. Liquid novolac resins can be synthesized.
