Outlines the development and trials of this new autonomous underwater vehicle, which is due to be operational in early 1996. Brief information on the vehicles predecessors and on sensor development is also given. Development of Theseus commenced in 1993 with the following requirements: range of 250 nautical miles; working depth of 3250 feet; cruising speed of 4 knots; and a payload bay of 96 inches by 44 inches diameter. The vehicle itself is 35 feet in length and 50 inches in diameter. Sensors include a custom designed multibeam forward looking sonar, an acoustic telemetry system, a homing transducer, positioning transponder and strobe lights. The vehicle can be powered by nickel-cadmium or silver-zinc batteries and can operate in ice-covered waters.
