Water stress suffered by the Segura basin in southern Spain tends to be unsustainable. The groundwater-based agricultural development will not be feasible in an overexploited situation. The cost of groundwater use and extraction for irrigation would mean 10% of the final agricultural crop production. The “good status” required by the European Water Framework Directive is unfulfilled. Viable alternative water sources are sought to ensure socioeconomic and environmental sustainability.
