Metals present in spent batteries were efficiently recycled.

Sulfuric acid was proved to be an efficient leaching agent to solubilize metals.

Optimum leaching conditions were determined using a Box-Behnken design.

Up to 65% of Mn, 68% of Ni, 74% of Co and 100% of Cd and Zn were solubilized.
