ERPs are used for spatiotemporal analysis of brain activation during processing following presentation of a novel stimulus. Increased ERP amplitudes in children/adolescents with functional neurological symptoms suggest increased cortical arousal. Increased cortical arousal may be a precondition for generating functional neurological symptoms. Interventions that target arousal early in the illness may improve remission and prevention chronic functional impairment.
