We caged migrants at stopover to measure migratory restlessness and refuelling rate.
We found that migratory restlessness increased over the spring season.
Late birds, however, did not increase their rate of fuel deposition.
Hence late birds speed up migration by shortening stopovers.
Our study shows that stopover departure decisions are partly endogenously regulated.
