An extreme frost (−6 °C) was recorded in the marginally tropical landscape of Hong Kong. Shrubs and early successional forest were severely damaged on higher elevations. The return frequency of frost explains the absence of many tropical taxa in Hong Kong. Increased frequency of such extreme events is likely under climate change predictions.
