Nurses play a key role in the diagnosis and follow-up of hypertension and other cardiovascular risk factors, as well as in achieving targets in patients with cardiovascular disease. Blood pressure measurement, in all its modalities (in the clinic, self [home] blood pressure measurement [HBPM] and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring [ABPM]) is an essential skill for nurses. Other areas in which nurses play an important role in hypertension care are education and follow-up in nonpharmacological treatment, monitoring of drug therapy, and assessment of goals in the follow-up of the hypertensive patient. Nurses are also major participants in many fields of cardiovascular research.
