Thermal functions of courtyards in Chinese shophouses of Malaysia are determined. Air temperatures in courtyards depend on sky view factor and heights of walls. Different types of courtyards perform different functions in improving indoor thermal comfort. Closed, cross-ventilated courtyards are suggested for modern houses in hot-humid climates.
