Oligo(ethylene glycol) strands bearing phenolic gallate termini were prepared.

Spiroborate formation resulted in self assembly to dimeric structures.

The dimeric structures could selectively bind to lithium or potassium ions.

A dimeric structure by X-ray crystallography showed inclusion of two potassium ions.

The dimeric structure could survive harsh conditions during post-modification.
