It is encouraging that the prevalence of myelomeningocele is declining. Owing to advances in medicine and surgery, these patients are living longer and more productive lives. It is inevitable, however, that to achieve full productivity, these patients will undergo many surgical procedures. Anesthesiologists must be knowledgeable about the central nervous system and respiratory impairment that is a prominent feature of this anomaly in order to intelligently provide care.
