Iron is both essential and toxic for biological systems Iron can induce cell death by generating free radicals as it interconverts between ferrous (Fe2 +) and ferric (Fe3 +) forms Elaborate mechanisms have evolved to absorb, re-cycle and store iron while minimizing toxicity The existing literature suggests that iron toxicity is common Our analysis suggests that existing regulatory processes are more than adequate to limit toxicity even in iron overload
