A new multiyear planning model for distribution system expansion is presented. A binary modified imperialist competitive algorithm (BMICA) is proposed. An improved shark smell optimization (ISSO) is suggested. By combination of BMICA and ISSO, a novel two-stage solution approach is presented. The efficacy of the proposed BMICA + ISSO is extensively investigated.
