The dynamics of E. coli proteome in response to nitrogen (N) starvation was determined. Activation of the NtrC regulon acts as the first line of defense against N starvation. The ribosome inactivating protein Rmf was induced shortly after N starvation Ribosome shut-down is a key process during N starvation. The proteome adaptations in response to N starvation result in metabolic inactive cells.
