Purpose: This study investigated the vision functions of drivers in major motoways in sub-rural western Nigeria. Method: 245 drivers were randomly stopped and examined in normal daylight at the roadside using letter chart to assess their monocular and binocular distance visual acuities. Results: This screening showed that 28.8 % of drivers holding professional drivers' licence had acuity worse than the equivalent of Snellen and 34.4 % of private drivers had such poor vision. In both groups, the incidence of poor vision was highest among the 26-35 age band but lowest in the 15-25 band of private drivers and the 46-55 band of professional drivers. Conclusion: Poor visual performance could be a primary cause of road traffic accidents in Nigeria. If a driver overtakes wrongly, he may be doing so because of some underlying visual deficiencies which hindered the sight, thus influenced the judgement of distances. (Supported by Ife Med.
