Growth factors are involved in the pathophysiology of pathogenesis of schizophrenia, depression, bipolar and anxiety disorders. Changes in growth-factor expression induces psychiatric-like behaviors in animals. Psychiatric patients show significant alterations in growth-factor serum levels. Disruption in growth-factor serum levels correlate to the severity of mental symptoms. Serological screening of cytokines may help diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.
