We used 3-D printed topography to investigate colonization of periphyton in streams. Printed substrata were colonized by a diverse community of periphyton algae. Community diversity was affected by topographic feature size. Two colonizing species, Microspora willeana and Stigeoclonium tenue, responded significantly to topographic feature size. Results suggest the potential of surface design for species selection in periphyton systems.
