Evidence on the influence of a skills enhancement program on clinical competence is limited. Development of clinical competence remains an issue in nursing. A skills enhancement program has four attributes. A supportive clinical instructor showed greatest influence on clinical competence. A structural model of the interaction among the variables was constructed.
