Species frequency was studied for bacteria isolated in 590 cases. Samples came from urinary tract infections detected by general practitioners in women 15 to 65 years of age, between April and June 1996. This study demonstrated the predominance of E. coli and P. mirabilis. These two main species were shown to be very sensitive to fosfomycin (98.2 % and 96.7 % of sensitive strains, respectively). Moreover, after several years of fosfomycin use (trometamol salt) in single-dose therapy for lower uncomplicated UTIs in women under 65 years of age, there is no evidence of increase in E. coli resistance to this antibiotic. Fosfomycin trometamol thus remains specifically adapted to the treatment of lower uncomplicated UTIs in women under 65 years of age.
